Psalms 37:11

11 But the meek shall inherit the land, and delight themselves in abundant prosperity.

Psalms 37:11 Meaning and Commentary

Psalms 37:11

But the meek shall inherit the earth
(See Gill on Psalms 37:9); of this character (See Gill on Psalms 22:26). Our Lord seems to refer to this passage in ( Matthew 5:5 ) ;

and shall delight themselves is the abundance of peace;
of spiritual peace enjoyed in a way of believing, arising from a comfortable view of interest in the blood, righteousness, and sacrifice of Christ; and of all happiness and prosperity in the kingdom of Christ here on earth, at which time there will be abundance of peace, ( Psalms 72:7 ) ; or of eternal peace in the world to come, which will be a state of uninterrupted and unspeakable peace; see ( Psalms 37:37 ) ; all which afford inconceivable delight and pleasure; and therefore such have no need to fret and be envious at the fading happiness of wicked men.

Psalms 37:11 In-Context

9 For the wicked shall be cut off, but those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land.
10 Yet a little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look diligently for their place, they will not be there.
11 But the meek shall inherit the land, and delight themselves in abundant prosperity.
12 The wicked plot against the righteous, and gnash their teeth at them;
13 but the Lord laughs at the wicked, for he sees that their day is coming.
