1After the uproar had ceased, Paulsent for 1the disciples, and when he had exhorted them and taken his leave of them, he left2to go to 3Macedonia.
2
When he had gonethroughthosedistricts and had given them muchexhortation*, he came to Greece.
3
And there he spentthreemonths, and when 4a plot was formedagainst him by the Jews as he was about to setsail for 5Syria, he decided* to returnthrough6Macedonia.
4
And he was accompanied by Sopater of 7Berea, the son of Pyrrhus, and by 8Aristarchus and Secundus of the 9Thessalonians, and 10Gaius of 11Derbe, and 12Timothy, and 13Tychicus and 14Trophimus of 15Asia.
5
But these had gone on ahead and were waiting for 16us at 17Troas.
6
18We sailed from 19Philippiafter20the days of Unleavened Bread, and came to them at 21Troaswithinfivedays; and there we stayedsevendays.
7
On 22the first day of the week, when 23we were gatheredtogether to 24breakbread, Paul began talking to them, intending to leave the nextday, and he prolonged his messageuntilmidnight.
8
There were many25lamps in the 26upperroomwhere we were gatheredtogether.
9
And there was a youngmannamedEutychussitting on the windowsill, sinking into a deepsleep; and as Paul kept on talking, he was overcome by sleep and felldown from the thirdfloor and was picked up dead.
10
But Paulwentdown and 27fell upon him, and after embracing him, he 28said, "Do not be troubled, for his life is in him."
11
When he had gone back up and had 29broken the bread and eaten, he talked with them a longwhileuntildaybreak, and thenleft.
12
They tookaway the boyalive, and were greatly*comforted.
Troas to Miletus
13 But 30we, goingahead to the ship, setsail for Assos, intending from there to takePaul on board; for so he had arranged it, intendinghimself to go by land.
14
And when he met us at Assos, we took him on board and came to Mitylene.
15
Sailing from there, we arrived the following day oppositeChios; and the next day we crossedover to Samos; and the day following we came to 31Miletus.
16
For Paul had decided to sailpast32Ephesusso that he would not have to spendtime in 33Asia; for he was hurrying34to be in Jerusalem, ifpossible, 35on the day of Pentecost.
Farewell to Ephesus
17 From Miletus he sent to 36Ephesus and called to him 37the elders of the church.
18
And when they had come to him, he said to them, "You yourselvesknow, 38 from the firstday that I setfoot in Asia, how I was with you the wholetime,
19
serving the Lord with allhumility and with tears and with trials which came upon me through39the plots of the Jews;
20
how I 40did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you publicly and from house to house,
21
solemnly41testifying to bothJews and Greeks of 42repentancetowardGod and 43faith in our LordJesusChrist.
22
"And now, behold, bound by the Spirit, 44I am on my way to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there*,
23
except that 45the HolySpiritsolemnly46testifies to me in everycity, saying that 47bonds and afflictionsawait me.
24
"But 48I do not consider my life of anyaccount as dear to myself, so that I may 49finish my course and 50the ministrywhich I received from the LordJesus, to 51testifysolemnly of the gospel of 52the grace of God.
25
"And now, behold, I know that all of you, amongwhom I wentabout53preaching the kingdom, will nolongersee my face.
26
"Therefore, I testify to you thisday that 54I aminnocent of the blood of allmen.
27
"For I 55did not shrink from declaring to you the whole56purpose of God.
28
"Be on guard for yourselves and for all57the flock, amongwhich the HolySpirit has made you overseers, to shepherd58the church of Godwhich59He purchased with His ownblood.
29
"I know that after my departure60savagewolves will come in among you, not sparing61the flock;
30
and from among your own selvesmen will arise, speakingperversethings, to drawaway62the disciplesafter them.
31
"Therefore be on the alert, remembering that night and day for a period of 63threeyears I did not cease to admonisheachone64with tears.
32
"And now I 65commend you to God and to 66the word of His grace, which is able to 67build you up and to give you 68the inheritanceamongallthose who are sanctified.
34
"You yourselvesknow that 70thesehandsministered to my own needs and to the 71men who were with me.
35
"In everything I showed you that by workinghard in thismanner you musthelp the weak and remember the words of the LordJesus, that He Himselfsaid, 'It is moreblessed to givethan to receive.'"
36
When he had saidthesethings, he 72knelt*down* and prayed with them all.
37
And they began to weepaloud and 73embraced**Paul, and repeatedly kissed him,
38
grievingespeciallyover74the wordwhich he had spoken, that they would not see his faceagain. And they were 75accompanying him to the ship.
