1Noweven the first covenant had1regulations of divineworship and 2the earthlysanctuary.
2
For there was 3a tabernacleprepared, the outerone, in which were 4the lampstand and 5the table and 6the sacredbread; this is called the holyplace.
3
Behind7the secondveil there was a tabernacle which is called the 8Holy of Holies,
4
having a golden9altar of incense and 10the ark of the covenantcovered on allsides with gold, in which was 11a goldenjarholding the manna, and 12Aaron'srod which budded, and 13the tables of the covenant;
5
and above it were the 14cherubim of glory15overshadowing the mercyseat; but of thesethings we cannotnowspeak in detail.
6
Now when thesethings have been soprepared, the priests16are continually*entering the outertabernacleperforming the divineworship,
7
but into 17the second, only18the highpriest enters 19once a year, 20not without taking blood, which he 21offers for himself and for the 22sins of the people committed in ignorance.
8
23The HolySpirit is signifyingthis, 24that the way into the holyplace has not yet been disclosed while the outertabernacle is stillstanding,
9
which is a symbol for the presenttime. Accordingly25bothgifts and sacrifices are offered which 26cannot*make the worshiperperfect in conscience,
10
since they relate only to 27food and 28drink and various29washings, 30regulations for the bodyimposeduntil31a time of reformation.
11
But when Christappeared as a 32highpriest of the 33goodthings to come, He entered through34the greater and moreperfecttabernacle, 35not made with hands, that is to say, 36not of thiscreation;
12
and not through37the blood of goats and calves, but 38through His ownblood, He 39entered the holyplace40once for all, having obtained41eternalredemption.
13
For if42the blood of goats and bulls and 43the ashes of a heifersprinklingthose who have been defiledsanctify for the cleansing of the flesh,
14
howmuchmore will 44the blood of Christ, whothrough45the eternalSpirit46offeredHimselfwithoutblemish to God, 47cleanse your conscience from 48deadworks to serve49the livingGod?
15
For thisreason50He is the 51mediator of a 52newcovenant, so that, since a death has takenplace for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the firstcovenant, those who have been 53called may 54receive the promise of 55the eternalinheritance.
16
For where a covenant is, there must of necessity be the death of the one who made it.
17
For a covenant is valid only when men are dead, for it is never in forcewhile the one who made it lives.
18
Thereforeeven the first covenant was not inauguratedwithoutblood.
19
For when everycommandment had been 56spoken by Moses to all the peopleaccording to the Law, 57he took the 58blood of the calves and the goats, with 59water and scarletwool and hyssop, and sprinkledboth60the bookitself and all the people,
20
saying, "61THIS IS THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANTWHICHGODCOMMANDED YOU."
21
And in the sameway he 62sprinkledboth the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry with the blood.
22
And according to the Law, one may 63almost say, allthings are cleansed with blood, and 64withoutshedding of blood there is noforgiveness.
23
Therefore it was necessary for the 65copies of the things in the heavens to be cleansed with these, but 66the heavenlythingsthemselves with bettersacrificesthanthese.
24
For Christ67did not enter a holyplacemade with hands, a mere copy of 68the trueone, but into 69heavenitself, now70to appear in the presence of God for us;
25
nor was it that He would offerHimselfoften, as 71the highpriestenters72the holyplace73year by year with blood that is not his own.
26
Otherwise, He would have needed to sufferoftensince74the foundation of the world; but now75once at 76the consummation of the ages He has been 77manifested to putawaysin78by the sacrifice of Himself.
27
And inasmuch* as 79it is appointed for men to dieonce and afterthis80comes judgment,
28
soChristalso, having been 81offeredonce to 82bear the sins of many, will appear83a secondtime for 84salvation85without reference to sin, to those who 86eagerlyawait Him.
