1Afterthesethings1Jesuswentaway to the otherside of 2the Sea of Galilee (or 3Tiberias ).
2
A largecrowdfollowed Him, because they saw the 4signswhich He was performing on those who were sick.
3
Then5Jesuswent up on the mountain, and there He satdown with His disciples.
4
Now6the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near.
5
ThereforeJesus, lifting up His eyes and seeing that a largecrowd was coming to Him, said to 7Philip, "Where are we to buybread, so that these may eat?"
6
This He was saying to 8test him, for He Himselfknewwhat He was intending to do.
7
9Philipanswered Him, "10Twohundreddenarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, for everyone to receive a little."
8
One of His 11disciples, 12Andrew, SimonPeter'sbrother, said to Him,
9
"There is a ladherewhohasfivebarleyloaves and two13fish, but what are these for somanypeople?"
10
Jesussaid, "Have the peoplesitdown."Now there was 14muchgrass in the place. So the mensatdown, in numberabout15fivethousand.
11
Jesusthentook the loaves, and 16having giventhanks, He distributed to those who were seated; likewisealso of the 17fish as much as they wanted.
12
When they were filled, He said to His 18disciples, "Gather up the leftoverfragmentsso that nothing* will be lost."
13
So they gathered them up, and filledtwelve19baskets with fragments from the fivebarleyloaveswhich were leftover by those who had eaten.
14
Therefore when the peoplesaw the signwhich He had performed, they said, "This is truly the 20Prophet who is to come into the world."
Jesus Walks on the Water
15SoJesus, perceiving that they were intending to come and take Him by force21to make Him king, 22withdrewagain to 23the mountain by Himselfalone.
16
Nowwheneveningcame, His 24discipleswentdown to the sea,
17
and after getting into a boat, they started to cross the sea25to Capernaum. It had alreadybecomedark, and Jesus had not yetcome to them.
18
The sea began to be stirred up because a strongwind was blowing.
19
Then, when they had rowedaboutthree*or four miles, they sawJesuswalking on the sea and drawingnear to the boat; and they were frightened.
20
But He said to them, "It is I; 26do not be afraid."
21
So they were willing to receive Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.
22
The nextday27the crowd that stood on the otherside of the seasaw that there was noothersmallboatthere, exceptone, and that Jesus28had not entered with His disciples into the boat, but that His disciples had goneawayalone.
23
There cameothersmallboats from 29Tiberiasnear to the placewhere they ate the bread after the 30Lord31had giventhanks.
24
Sowhen the crowdsaw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they themselvesgot into the smallboats, and 32came to CapernaumseekingJesus.
25
When they found Him on the otherside of the sea, they said to Him, "33Rabbi, when did You gethere?"
Words to the People
26Jesusanswered them and said, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you 34seek Me, not because you saw35signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.
27
"Do not 36work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to 37eternallife, which38the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, 39has set His seal."
28
Therefore they said to Him, "What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?"
29
Jesusanswered and said to them, "This is 40the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He 41has sent."
30
So they said to Him, "42Whatthen do You do for a 43sign, so that we may see, and believe You? Whatwork do You perform?
31
"44Our fathersate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, '45HE GAVE THEM BREAD OUT OF HEAVEN TO EAT.' "
32
Jesusthensaid to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the truebread out of heaven.
33
"For the bread of God is that which 46comesdown out of heaven, and giveslife to the world."
34
Then they said to Him, "Lord, always47give us thisbread."
35
Jesussaid to them, "48I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me 49will never*thirst.
36
"But 50I said to you that you have seen Me, and yet do not believe.
37
"51All that the Fathergives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly* not cast out.
38
"For 52I have comedown from heaven, 53not to do My ownwill, but 54the will of Him who 55sent Me.
39
"This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of 56all that He has given Me I 57losenothing, but 58raise it up on the lastday.
40
"For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who 59beholds the Son and 60believes in Him will haveeternallife, and I Myself will 61raise him up on the lastday."
Words to the Jews
4162Therefore the Jews were grumblingabout Him, because He said, "I am the bread that 63camedown out of heaven."
42
They were saying, "64Is not thisJesus, the son of Joseph, whosefather and mother65we know? How does He nowsay, '66I have comedown out of heaven '?"
43
Jesusanswered and said to them, "Do not grumbleamongyourselves.
44
"Noonecancome to Me unless* the Father who sent Me 67draws him; and I will 68raise him up on the lastday.
45
"It is written69in the prophets, '70AND THEY SHALL ALL BE 71TAUGHT OF GOD.' Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me.
46
"72Not that anyone has seen the Father, except the One who is from God; He has seen the Father.
47
"Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes73haseternallife.
49
"75Your fathersate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.
50
"This is the bread which 76comesdown out of heaven, so that one may eat of it and 77not die.
51
"78I am the livingbread that 79camedown out of heaven; ifanyoneeats of thisbread, 80he will liveforever; and the breadalsowhich I will give81for the life of the world is 82My flesh."
52
83Then the Jews84began to argue with oneanother, saying, "Howcanthismangive us His flesh to eat?"
53
SoJesussaid to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless* you eat the flesh of 85the Son of Man and drink His blood, you havenolife in yourselves.
54
"He who eats My flesh and drinks My bloodhaseternallife, and I will 86raise him up on the lastday.
55
"For My flesh is truefood, and My blood is truedrink.
56
"He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood87abides in Me, and I in him.
57
"As the 88livingFather89sent Me, and I livebecause of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also will livebecause of Me.
58
"This is the breadwhich90camedown out of heaven; not as 91the fathersate and died; he who eatsthisbread92will liveforever."
Words to the Disciples
59Thesethings He said93in the synagogue as He taught94in Capernaum.
60
Thereforemany of His 95disciples, when they heard this said, "96This is a difficultstatement; whocanlisten to it?"
61
But Jesus, 97conscious** that His disciplesgrumbled at this, said to them, "Does this98cause you to stumble?
62
"What thenif you see99the Son of Man100ascending to where He was before?
63
"101It is the Spirit who giveslife; the fleshprofitsnothing; 102the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.
64
"But there are 103some of you who do not believe." For Jesus104knew from the beginningwho they were who did not believe, and 105who it was that would betray Him.
65
And He was saying, "For thisreason I have 106said to you, that noonecancome to Me unless*107it has beengranted him from the Father."
Peter's Confession of Faith
66 As a result of thismany of His 108disciples109withdrew* and were not walking with Him anymore.
67
SoJesussaid to 110the twelve, "You do not want to goawayalso, do you?"
68
111SimonPeteranswered Him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have112words of eternallife.
69
"We have believed and have come to know that You are 113the HolyOne of God."
70
Jesusanswered them, "114Did I Myself not choose you, 115the twelve, and yet one of you is 116a devil?"
71
Now He meantJudas117the son of SimonIscariot, for he, 118one of 119the twelve, was going to betray Him.
