11WhenJesus had finishedallthesewords, He said to His disciples,
2
"2You know that aftertwodays3the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man is to be 4handed over for crucifixion."
3
5Then the chiefpriests and the elders of the people were gatheredtogether in 6the court of the highpriest, named7Caiaphas;
4
and they 8plottedtogether to seizeJesus by stealth and kill Him.
5
But they were saying, "Not during the festival, 9otherwise* a riot might occuramong the people."
The Precious Ointment
610Now when Jesus was in 11Bethany, at the home of Simon the leper,
7
12a womancame to Him with an alabastervial of verycostlyperfume, and she poured it on His head as He reclined at the table.
8
But the disciples were indignant when they saw this, and said, "Why*thiswaste?
9
"For this perfume might have been sold for a highprice and the money given to the poor."
10
But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, "Why do you bother* the woman? For she has done a gooddeed to Me.
11
"For you alwayshave13the poor with you; but you do not alwayshave Me.
12
"For when she pouredthisperfume on My body, she did it 14to prepare Me for burial.
13
"Truly I say to you, 15wherever*thisgospel is preached in the wholeworld, whatthiswoman has done will also be spoken of in memory of her."
Judas's Bargain
1416Thenone of the twelve, named17JudasIscariot, went to the chiefpriests
15
and said, "What are you willing to give me to 18betray Him to you?" And 19they weighed out thirtypieces of silver to him.
16
From then on he began looking for a goodopportunity to betray Jesus.
17
20Now on the first day of 21Unleavened Bread the disciplescame to Jesus and asked, "Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?"
18
And He said, "Go into the city to 22a certainman, and say to him, 'The Teachersays, "23My time is near; I am to keep the Passover at your house with My disciples."' "
19
The disciplesdid as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover.
The Last Passover
2024Now when eveningcame, Jesus was reclining at the table with the twelvedisciples.
21
As they were eating, He said, "25Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me."
22
Being deeplygrieved, they eachonebegan to say to Him, "Surely not I, Lord?"
23
And He answered, "26He who dipped his hand with Me in the bowl is the one who will betray Me.
24
"The Son of Man is to go, 27just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! 28It would have beengood for that manif he had not been born."
25
And 29Judas, who was betraying Him, said, "Surely it is not I, 30Rabbi?" Jesus said to him, "31You have said it yourself."
The Lord's Supper Instituted
2632While they were eating, Jesustook some bread, and 33after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, "Take, eat; this is My body."
27
And when He had taken a cup and giventhanks, He gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you;
28
for 34this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for 35many for forgiveness of sins.
29
"But I say to you, I will not drink of thisfruit of the vine from now on until that daywhen I drink it new with you in My Father'skingdom."
30
36After singing a hymn, they went out to 37the Mount of Olives.
31
ThenJesussaid to them, "You will all38fallawaybecause of Me thisnight, for it is written, '39I WILL STRIKEDOWN THE SHEPHERD, AND THE SHEEP OF THE FLOCK SHALL BE 40SCATTERED.'
32
"But after I have been raised, 41I will goahead of you to Galilee."
33
But Petersaid to Him, "Even thoughall may fallawaybecause of You, I will neverfallaway."
34
Jesussaid to him, "42Truly I say to you that 43this very night, before a roostercrows, you will deny Me threetimes."
35
Petersaid to Him, "44Evenif I have to die with You, I will not deny You." All the disciplessaid the samethingtoo.
The Garden of Gethsemane
3645ThenJesuscame with them to a placecalled46Gethsemane, and said to His disciples, "Sitherewhile I gooverthere and pray."
37
And He took with Him 47Peter and the twosons of Zebedee, and began to be grieved and distressed.
38
Then He said to them, "48My soul is deeplygrieved, to the point of death; remainhere and 49keepwatch with Me."
39
And He went a littlebeyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, "My Father, if it is possible, let 50thiscuppass from Me; 51yet not as I will, but as You will."
40
And He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, "So, you men could not 52keepwatch with Me for onehour?
41
"53Keepwatching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; 54the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."
42
He wentawayagain a secondtime and prayed, saying, "My Father, ifthis55cannot*passawayunless* I drink it, 56Your will be done."
43
Again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.
44
And He left them again, and wentaway and prayed a thirdtime, saying the samethingoncemore.
45
Then He came to the disciples and said to them, "Are you stillsleeping and resting? Behold, 57the hour is at hand and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.
46
"Get up, let us be going; behold, the one who betrays Me is at hand!"
Jesus' Betrayal and Arrest
4758While He was stillspeaking, behold, 59Judas, one of the twelve, came up accompanied* by a largecrowd with swords and clubs, who came from the chiefpriests and elders of the people.
48
Now he who was betraying Him gave them a sign, saying, "Whomever* I kiss, He is the one; seize Him."
49
Immediately Judas went to Jesus and said, "Hail, 60Rabbi!" and kissed Him.
50
And Jesussaid to him, "61Friend, do what you havecome for."Then they came and laidhands on Jesus and seized Him.
51
And behold, 62one of thosewho were with Jesusreached and drew out his 63sword, and struck the 64slave of the highpriest and cutoff his ear.
52
ThenJesussaid to him, "Put your swordback into its place; for 65allthose who take up the sword shall perish by the sword.
53
"Or do you think that I cannot*appeal to My Father, and He will at onceput at My disposalmore than twelve66legions of 67angels?
54
"Howthen will 68the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it musthappenthisway?"
55
At that timeJesussaid to the crowds, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a robber? 69Everyday I used to sit in the templeteaching and you did not seize Me.
56
"But allthis has takenplace to fulfill70the Scriptures of the prophets."Thenall the disciplesleft Him and fled.
Jesus before Caiaphas
5771Those who had seizedJesusled Him away to 72Caiaphas, the highpriest, where the scribes and the elders were gatheredtogether.
58
But 73Peter was following Him at a distance as far as the 74courtyard of the highpriest, and entered in, and satdown with the 75officers to see the outcome.
59
Now the chiefpriests and the whole76Council kept trying to obtainfalsetestimonyagainstJesus, so that they might put Him to death.
60
They did not find any, even though manyfalsewitnessescameforward. But later on 77twocameforward,
61
and said, "Thismanstated, '78I amable to destroy the temple of God and to rebuild it in threedays.' "
62
The highprieststood up and said to Him, "Do You not answer? What is it that thesemen are testifyingagainst You?"
63
But 79Jesuskeptsilent. 80And the highpriestsaid to Him, "I 81adjure You by 82the livingGod, that You tell us whether You are the Christ, 83the Son of God."
64
Jesussaid to him, "84You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, hereafter* you will see85THE SON OF MANSITTING AT THE RIGHTHAND OF POWER, and 86COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN."
65
Then the highpriest87tore his robes and said, "He has blasphemed! Whatfurtherneed do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have nowheard the blasphemy;
66
what do you think?" They answered, "88He deservesdeath!"
67
89Then they 90spat in His face and beat Him with their fists; and othersslapped Him,
68
and said, "91Prophesy to us, You Christ; who is the one who hit You?"
Peter's Denials
6992NowPeter was sittingoutside in the 93courtyard, and a servant-girlcame to him and said, "You too were with Jesus the Galilean."
70
But he denied it before them all, saying, "I do not knowwhat you are talking about."
71
When he had gone out to the gateway, another servant-girl saw him and said to thosewho were there, "Thisman was with Jesus of Nazareth."
72
And again he denied it with an oath, "I do not know the man."
73
A littlelater the bystanderscame up and said to Peter, "Surely you too are one of them; 94for even the way you talkgives you away*."
74
Then he began to curse and swear, "I do not know the man!" And immediately a roostercrowed.
75
And Peterremembered the word which Jesus had said, "95Before a roostercrows, you will deny Me threetimes." And he went out and weptbitterly.
