Titus 1

Salutation

Paul, 1a bond-servant of God and an 2apostle of Jesus Christ, [a]for the faith of those 3chosen of God and 4the knowledge of the truth which is 5according to godliness,
in 6the hope of eternal life, which God, 7who cannot lie, 8promised [b]9long ages ago,
but 10at the proper time manifested, even His word, in 11the proclamation 12with which I was entrusted 13according to the commandment of 14God our Savior,
To 15Titus, 16my true child [c]in a 17common faith: 18Grace and peace from God the Father and 19Christ Jesus our Savior.

Qualifications of Elders

For this reason I left you in 20Crete, that you would set in order what remains and 21appoint 22elders in every city as I directed you,
namely, 23if any man is above reproach, the 24husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of 25dissipation or 26rebellion.
For the [d]27overseer must be above reproach as 28God's steward, not 29self-willed, not quick-tempered, not 30addicted to wine, not pugnacious, 31not fond of sordid gain,
but 32hospitable, 33loving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled,
34holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in 35sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.
36For there are many 37rebellious men, 38empty talkers and deceivers, especially 39those of the circumcision,
who must be silenced because they are upsetting 40whole families, teaching 41things they should not teach 42for the sake of sordid gain.
One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, "43Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons."
This testimony is true. For this reason 44reprove them 45severely so that they may be 46sound in the faith,
not paying attention to Jewish 47myths and 48commandments of men who 49turn away from the truth.
50To the pure, all things are pure; but 51to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their 52mind and their conscience are defiled.
53They profess to know God, but by their deeds they 54deny Him, being 55detestable and 56disobedient and 57worthless 58for any good deed.
